Fire destroys buildings at Universal Studios in L.A.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A huge fire burned for nearly 10 hours at the Universal Studios film and TV studio on Sunday, damaging a sound stage, movie sets, a popular "King Kong" attraction and shutting down its theme park and CityWalk shopping center for the day.

About 500 firefighters from several Los Angeles-area fire departments battled the blaze, and six were treated for injuries. A deputy sheriff was also treated after he and a firefighter were hurt in an explosion in a burning warehouse, L.A. County Fire Inspector Ron Haralson said.

Haralson said the fire had been contained to a single structure -- the "King Kong" exhibit -- and that firefighters had brought in bulldozers to move thousands of burning videotapes and other flaming debris. Firefighters earlier predicted the blaze would be "knocked down" within hours.

A total of five structures within the New York exhibit, including one sound stage, were lost in the fire.

Also damaged was the "King Kong" attraction, a famous alley from "The Sting" and a set from "Back to the Future".

Sunday's taping of the popular MTV Movie Awards at the adjacent Gibson Amphitheater, which was not affected, was set to go ahead as planned.

Company officials had earlier said the studio's theme park and popular CityWalk shopping center would open at noon, but changed courses by around 2:45 p.m. (5:00 p.m. EDT), saying that neither the theme park or CityWalk would open.

Cars had earlier been let in, and a Reuters journalist saw people lined up outside a restaurant on CityWalk.

Ratings For NBA Telecasts Soar

Ratings for the NBA playoff games on ESPN, TNT and ABC have seen some of their biggest jumps in history, with ESPN's soaring 35 percent through 19 telecasts, TNT's up 16 percent through 40 telecasts, and ABC's rising 28 percent through 10 telecasts, according to Broadcasting & Cable magazine, which cited Nielsen Media Research. The Conference Finals have shown even greater increases, with ESPN's telecasts of the Boston Celtics-Detroit Pistons series recording a 41 percent increase over last season's similar coverage. TNT's telecasts of the Los Angeles Lakers-San Antonio Spurs contest was up 37 percent, while ABC's telecasts of the Celtics-Pistons series was up 19 percent. Analysts predict that a Lakers-Celtics series will fly off the ratings charts. The ratings are even more impressive given last year's ratings debacle, when they reached their lowest point ever. Meanwhile, on CBS, the debut of the mixed martial arts series Elite XC Saturday Night Fights also turned out to represent a ratings boon, with the network showing a 36-percent boost in its ratings for adults 18-49 and a boost of more than 100 percent among males 18-34.

Madonna - Madonna Faces Visitation Challenge By Bandas Father

MADONNA and husband GUY RITCHIE are facing a challenge to their adoption of Malawian tot DAVID BANDA - the baby's biological father wants to fight for visitation rights to the child.

The superstar couple's adoption of the two-year-old was finalised at Malawi?s High Court in May (08) - 20 months after being granted an 'interim' order allowing them to take the baby from a Malawian orphanage back to their London home.

David was left at the care home after his mother died in childbirth and his peasant farmer dad Yohane Banda was unable to provide for the then-seven-month-old baby.

But now Yohane claims government officials had promised him access his son ?every three to four years? as part of the adoption arrangement and he is looking into his legal rights to see the child.

He says, "I love the boy and it was in his best interests to put him in the orphanage.

"Because I support the adoption I would not want to put up a challenge that would reverse it, but I might challenge some aspects of the order.

"I am discussing with my family about following up on having access to the child. We will not leave things the way they are - we will do something about it."

Madonna and director Ritchie's adoption of little David has been marred by controversy ever since they brought him back to the U.K., with critics claiming the couple had been given special treatment to side-step the official adoption process.
